Bowl with Dancers

Iran, 7th-8th centuries

This characteristic Sasanian lobed bowl features two dancers performing a ritual dance. One of them is holding a scarf that flies up to form an arch above her, while the other one is clasping sistra in both hands. The female characters are wearing tight-fitting dresses, their slender waists wrapped in belts, pleated baggy trousers, bracelets on the wrists and pendant necklaces.
The smaller lobes of the bowl show deer figures, with the rest of the surface covered with foliage ornament.
