Bowl

Created: Iran. 5th - early 7th century

Found: Pereshchepina Complex. The environs of Poltava near the village of Malaya Pereshchepina

The massive smooth bowl has a mannered shape, invented by the Sassanid masters. In the VI-IX centuries this form had been often imitated in Central Asia and China, and in the XI-XII centuries in Byzantium. The weight and magnificent manufacture of the bowl allow us to attribute it to the treasures of the Shahinshah of Iran. The bowl was found in 1912 among the treasures of the Kagrat Kagan, and it entered the museum in 1914 as part of the Pereshchepin treasure.
