On 5 September 2024, the Hermitage–Eurasia Centre will open in Orenburg, becoming the State Hermitage’s fifth satellite centre. This is one more stage in the Greater Hermitage programme, which includes the creation of the museum’s exhibition centres in Russia and abroad. The project will expand cultural ties between Russian regions and provide the residents of Orenburg region with access to artefacts of world culture and artworks from the unique Hermitage collection.
The new centre is located in the building of the Orenburg Regional Museum of Fine Arts, constructed in the early 19th century to the design of architect Mikhail Pavlovich Malakhov. The centre will host not only joint exhibitions, but also scholarly and practical conferences, seminars and round tables on museum issues, as well as meetings with contemporary artists, master classes and lectures.
The first joint exhibition is devoted to portraiture of the 1830s–50s, a time often referred to as the “Age of Briullov”, and is a homage of sorts to Karl Pavlovich Briullov (1799–1852) in the year of the 225th anniversary of the great artist’s birth.
