The display in this hall includes The Lamentation, one of the finest works of Sebastiano del Piombo (Sebastiano Luciani, 1485–1547). This outstanding Venetian artist who worked in Rome from 1511 was nicknamed del Piombo (from the word for “lead” or a “lead seal”) after he became the keeper of the papal seal in 1531. He also painted the deeply tragic Carrying the Cross and the grand Portrait of Cardinal Reginald Pole. A Portrait of a Man believed to be by Domenico Capriolo (1494–1528) may be a self-portrait of the artist.
