On 7 May, as part of its involvement in the 22nd RESTAURO Exhibition on the Art of Restoration and Conservation of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage, the Hermitage presented a master class devoted to the traditional mediaeval technique of producing painted leaded stained glass.
The artist-restorers Yelena Krylova and Yekaterina Dutova (from the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art, Stained Glass Sector) demonstrated all the stages in preparing and painting a piece of stained glass: marking out, cutting the glass, grinding it smooth, applying a silver mordant, firing, applying multiple layers of grisaille, painting with glass enamel paints, decoration using the fusing technique (sintering pieces of glass), assembling a panel using lead cames and soldering.
Exhibition visitors were offered the unique opportunity to participate themselves under the guidance of experienced restorers in some of the technical processes, which aroused genuine interest. The presentation of the master class continued over the next few days.
