On 1 April 2023, the Hermitage School Centre marked the Day of Laughter with a celebratory programme for school children and the announcement of the new computer graphics and animation competition – “A Mad Tea-Party with Lewis Carroll at the Hermitage”.
The participants in the event were taken on a grand tour around the Hermitage accompanied by one of the world’s most mischievous storytellers, the author of the famous Alice in
Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass – Lewis Carroll (played by the head of the Hermitage’s Volunteer Service, Mikhail Kozhukhovsky).
Few people know that in 1867 the famous writer visited the Imperial Hermitage, which was opened 15 years before he came to Saint Petersburg. Throughout his travels around Russia, Lewis Carroll kept a journal, in which he also recorded his impressions of the Hermitage.
The guests of the day were able to imagine what Alice’s creator might have seen in the museum. Their walk was accompanied by recitations of funny poems, amusing tasks to perform, deciphering the Russian words Carroll wrote in his journey, acting out a humorous poem and other challenges related to the wonders to be found in Carroll’s stories and in the Hermitage.
Pupils and teachers from Saint Petersburg schools, Hermitage volunteers and staff from the School Centre took part in the Hermitage’s Day of Laughter.
During the celebration, the 26th competition of computer graphics and animation “A Mad Tea Party with Lewis Carroll at the Hermitage” was announced. The contest, open to schoolchildren of all ages, is organized by the museum’s Volunteer Service in conjunction with the Hermitage School Centre. The rules for participation will soon be available
on
the official State Hermitage website.
