The design of the lift required a large cylinder and piston to move the cabin up and down, which was supposed to be located below the cabin. That would, however, have meant digging a deep pit in immediate proximity to supporting walls and the foundations of the building. The solution that was found was both simple and brilliant: the cylinder of the hydraulic system was moved to the top, above the cabin of the lift. It was to house this that the tall lift tower was constructed. Its dome was topped with a gilded apple with a spire.
