The settlement of Qala-Quraysh is a fortification on a mountain summit in southern Dagestan. There the utsmi (rulers) of Kaitag – one of the famous feudal domains of the medieval period in the Caucasus – found their final resting places. The more than thirty gravestones are nearly the only artefacts surviving from that dynasty. The earliest of them date from the 13th century, and the most recent from the 19th. Many of them bear no names, but all of them have sayings.
