The human world in the Age of Antiquity was surrounded by an immense barely explored world that harboured a whole host of dangers.
The realm of horror in that era was populated by numerous creatures that embodied its various manifestations. The exhibition invites visitors to explore the visible images of ancient horror. The sections of the display represent different spheres of terror, demonstrating the personifications that formed in the minds of people in Greco-Roman times. Personified horror becomes vulnerable. Even the most powerful monster was unable to stand up to a hero who would defeat him in a fair fight or else by trickery. The hero’s victory symbolized a person’s triumph over their fears.
The main aim of the exhibition is to present various monsters that personified this or that kind of terror, their depictions and the story of how they were slain by heroes.
