In April 1724 the first rouble coins bearing the abbreviation СПБ – SPB for Saint Petersburg – were struck.
That moment is the starting point in the history of the Saint Petersburg Mint, one of the city’s oldest industrial enterprises which did not cease to function even during the Siege of Leningrad.
It is intended that the display will contain around 1,000 exhibits divided across 32 thematic sections that span the history of the Mint from 1724 to the present day. Among the exhibits it will be possible to find rare, trial and mass-produced coins and medals, designs, a stamping tool, sculpture, paintings, graphic art, photographic materials and documents.
Additionally, the exhibition will show the process of creating coins and medals, the equipment and technology involved in their production.
The exhibition will be organized by the State Hermitage in conjunction with the joint-stock company Goznak with the participation of the Russian State Historical Archive and the National Library of Russia.
