June 11, 2013 an opening of the exhibition, dedicated to the heritage of architecture of 1930-1940 in Tel-Aviv and history of the local branch of the Bauhaus European art school, took place into the main headquarter.
The State Hermitage Museum and Hermitage 20/21 project continue the series of architectural exhibits and present an exhibition, called The White city. The Bauhaus architecture in Tel-Aviv, which is dedicated to the heritage of architecture of 1930-1940 in Tel-Aviv and history of the local branch of the Bauhaus European art school, took place into the main headquarter.
The Bauhaus is the higher school of construction and styling design, which was founded in 1919 in Germany and united architects, artists, drawers, interested in avant-garde art experiments. In their creative endeavor they equaled applied and fine arts, they were breaking traditional relations between the form and function, texture and ornament, comfort and utility. Within the framework of the Bauhaus the developed unique educational programs and stated principally new methods of modern construction. Establishment of International style into the European and American architecture shall not be possible without this creative base.
In 1933, when the school was closed by the Nazi government, significant part of Jewish architects emigrated from Germany to Palestine. Into Tel-Aviv ideas of the Bauhaus was continued into the projects of development of multiple residential areas. At that time only a small part of the architects had an opportunity for such integral building development. Tel-Aviv became an ideal ground for realization of both aesthetic and social program of Jewish functionalism. Laconic concrete buildings, painted into light colours, gave Tel-Aviv its new name - The White City. Living houses, offices, shops, schools, kinder gardens, parks and prospects - more than 4000 buildings of the local International school were considered to be world heritage sited by UNESCO in 2004.
The White City exhibition shall talk about the history of formation of Tel-Aviv Bauhaus and specific traits of implementation of the local architectural conception of 1930-1940th. At the exposition you can see aerographs, photographs, maps, models, video-films, 3-D visualisations. Preservation plan of Tel-Aviv historic center is of very high interest.
The exposition was planned as a part of the program of the city promotion for acquisition of the status of UNESCO world heritage site. Characteristic traits of the White City are displayed into three sections City Structure and Tel-Aviv Streets, European influence, Development of Local Architectural Style.
The exhibition displays uniqueness and complexity of the city at very different levels. Geographical position of Tel-Aviv significantly determines its character. It is reflected into the light and optimistic atmosphere, dynamic way of life, openness and special creative constituent. Acquaintance with the city and its particularities will help to understand the necessity of preservation of those buildings, which is a basic premise for the preservation of the spirit and image of the city in future.
The exhibition is accompanied with vast educational program. June 13, 2013, at 11:00, a conference, called Modern city and problem of preservation of modernism era architecture, shall take place into the Lecture-hall of the Main Headquarter. At this lecture reports shall be presented by the architects, taken part into the restoration of memorials of the White City in Tel-Aviv. Famous Petersburg historians and architects shall tell about problems of preservation of architectural heritage of XX century in Saint Petersburg.

Illustrated catalogue is prepared for the exhibition, which includes the opening speech by M.B.Piotrovsky, Director General of the State Hermitage Museum. Authors of the articles - Nitza Metzger-Schmuck, architecture historian, and Kseniya Malich.
